The Iapetus Ocean, which covered Ireland during the Ordovician period, vanished through the upheaval of volcanoes and earthquakes. Mountains as high as the Himalayas rose to the North, as sedimentary rock folded and morphed. Taking on a naive lithological study, I traced the way the light created movement in these ancient rocks. My small attempt to grasp this unstable time, was through slipping 460 million years through my hands.

 

Kate Nolan is an Irish visual artist, whose practice is concerned with the effect of place and the nature of identity.
